Flotsam & Jetsam

Flotsam is floating wreckage of a ship or its cargo. Jetsam is part of a ship, its equipment, or its cargo that is purposefully cast overboard or jettisoned to lighten the load in time of distress and that sinks or is washed ashore.”

Here are some of the bizarre things that were cast away and left behind in our wreck of a yard when we moved in:

1.  Creepy garden angel.  At around dusk, this dude still looks like he’s going to come alive, run across the lawn, pounce on me, and rip the veins out of my throat with his sharp, cat-like fangs.  (More about cats later) (Incidentally, more about compost later – and you’ll see our first-attempt compost cage depicted next to Evil Garden Angel below).

2.  This weird dream catcher.  Weirdos.

3.  Stupid butterfly/fairy/whatever thing.  It’s like someone turned every terrible chick tattoo into a tiny metal charm and hung it on our otherwise lovely wisteria trellis.

But the previous tenants also left behind a bunch of useful stuff – like shears, a spade, a shovel and a rake, some soil, a pushmower, and a number of pots that this year we’re hoping to fill with flowers and a few extra herbs.
